Simone DeSousa EDITION is pleased to present “Sincerely Yours,” a special feature of digital print works by Laura Bombach.

Laura Bombach is a Detroit-based conceptual artist who has always lived on the border. She received a BFA in Sculpture and Metalsmithing from the University of Texas, in El Paso, and an MFA in Metalsmithing from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She employs various materials and media, using loaded materials and a detached voice to explore value, defeat, and anxiety. She currently lives in Hamtramck, Michigan, with her two cats, Mildred and Dasha.

“I have castrated my materials. They do not exist anymore, I have cut and chewed and spit out my vision of beauty and value. What makes something have worth? My materials do not exist, not really. They are copies of copies of copies of something I ended up throwing away.
The expectations of the prosaic imagery are subverted by the material (or lack thereof), and in turn the material is heightened and ultimately let down by the imagery. The imagery becomes immaterial, bodiless. Does the value of the material translate to its image? At what point does this stop mattering? The questions asked are sincere, and sincerely self-defeating. The work becomes its own comic foil to the expectations it set up. Who is let in on the joke? I’m not sure I’m in on it either.”
