Simone DeSousa EDITION is pleased to present a selection of new works by Detroit-based textile artist Kayla Powers.

“soft grid” is a body of work that emphasizes the fundamental structure of a woven textile through design and pattern. All of the colors come from plants that were grown or foraged in the city of Detroit – representing a moment in time and place.

The grid design references the warp and the weft of the loom, which is the beginning of all woven compositions. It can also be read as the intersection of natural and the human-made environments – the physical grid that is imposed upon the land and the soft spaces in between.

Kayla Powers is a place-based artist living and working on the East Side of Detroit. She creates naturally dyed, handwoven textiles with locally grown plants and natural fibers. Her work is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world and to the long tradition of craft. She finds inspiration in the limitations of a seasonal palette and the utilitarian nature of cloth.

Kayla Powers received a degree in Art History from Western Michigan University.
