Announcing an Exciting New Chapter for our Gallery: |
|
 |
 |
Dear Friends,
There is so much to share. I am excited to announce that starting September 2023, Simone DeSousa Gallery is becoming Matéria.
Our new name signals the beginning of a new era of collaborations for our project, as we expand our presence in the city with a second space located in Detroit's Core City neighborhood.
Matéria
In Portuguese, my native language, Matéria has different meanings, one is “the substance in which all objects exist,” another is in reference to “a subject that you study.”
It is my intention that Matéria becomes a container to bring together the sum of our learnings from the past decade of gallery practice, while infusing our project with new, expanded, energy. |

Since 2009, our contemporary art gallery and project located in Cass Corridor, Midtown Detroit, has presented more than 100 exhibitions, including works by local, national, and international emerging, mid-career,a nd established artists, and has played a pivotal role in supporting contemporary art and design in Detroit. In 2016, we also exapnded our model with an EDITION space.
The new space in Core City will open to the public on Saturday, September 9, with the presentation of two distinct exhibitions: Megan Heeres’ solo exhibition Tending Time, and Bilge Nur Saltik’s solo exhibition Form&Seek: Poetic, presented in conjunction with the Detroit Month of Design. The two shows will be presented side by side in the new location, opening with a public reception with the artists on Saturday, September, 6-8 pm, and will be on view through October 7.
The official press release for both exhibitions, including all the details about the extensive programming connected to the shows, comes out next week. |

Our new Matéria website (www.materia-art.com) is now live, but our current Simone DeSousa Gallery website will continue to be up, and up-to-date, until we finish transferring all the archives and information to our new site.
Please make a note of our upcoming calendars for both spaces.

Matéria é tudo aquilo que tem massa e volume, sendo a unidade fundamental de todos os objetos físicos. Tudo que você pode tocar ou sentir, como o ar, uma árvore, animais e você, são feitos de matéria.
