Diane Cheklich and Mark Sarmel

Detroit Saves the World is a comic book about some unlikely Detroit superheroes who rally the city, and in turn the world, to rise up against climate change. The story is designed primarily to entertain, but also to raise awareness about climate change. This is the first in a series of three Detroit Saves the World stories, and the whole project is an experiment in using art and storytelling to reach audiences who may not be tuned in to the issue of climate change. Though the stories are fiction, the hope is they will inspire similar stories in the real world!

The Detroit Saves the World series will eventually be made into short films as well. The comic book version can be thought of as an alternative to the traditional storyboarding process used in film design. Detroit Saves the World was written by filmmaker Diane Cheklich and illustrated by visual artist Mark Sarmel.

Limited edition of 50 signed and numbered copies sold exclusively through Simone DeSousa EDITION.

Diane Cheklich is an independent film director and 2014 Kresge Artist Fellow. Her award-winning feature film, Offshore, is an Indo-American movie that was shot in both the U.S. and India. Ms. Cheklich has also written and directed several short films, including the award-winning Doctor Reddy, which is in distribution through Ouat Media, and LATE, which has played at film festivals around the world and is in distribution through the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.
