Born and raised in Michigan, Jarvi has long been influenced by the landscapes of the Great Lakes region. After a decade living in the Pacific Northwest, he returned to Michigan to attend Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he graduated with an MFA from the Photography Department in 2018. Jarvi’s work uses a playful mix of photography, sculpture and gesture to question experiences of place and to explore possibilities of interaction with the landscape. He currently lives and works in Detroit – and whenever possible runs to the perched dune forests along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
Kahshahpiwi Lake is located in a remote wilderness area near the heart of Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. The long, narrow lake follows a fault line in the Canadian Shield, with a shoreline characterized by sheer cliffs surrounded by dense forest composed of coniferous and deciduous trees including white, red, and jack pine, black spruce, aspen and birch.
