Kaysi Grimes
Mitochondria, 2019
Edition of 5
Silkscreen on paper
20x28in

Kaysi Grimes is currently a graduate student at Cranbrook Academy of Art in the Print Media department. She is originally from Visalia, CA where she went to College of the Sequoias. She finished her bachelors of fine art degree at Sonoma State University. She explores themes of family, spirituality, the scientific and the supernatural. She uses printmaking as a tool and as a concept in exploring multi-media work.

The print “Mitochondria” is a seven layer silkscreen that is an ongoing investigation of pattern and illusion. Mitochondria is a cellular element that is only passed down biologically through the mother. The pattern within the piece is an abstraction of the way we illustrate this organelle in scientific diagrams. Mitochondria is also used in forensic science to determine the source of DNA that is recovered from damaged or degraded biological samples. This piece is a kind of dissection of maternal influences in genetics and identity.
