Bud Vase: Series II, 2019
Edition of 10
Terracotta
5 (h) x 3.5 (w) inches
Includes box signed and editioned by the artist
Functional and water-tight. Food, dishwasher, and microwave safe

The first series of bud vases in this line of vessels focused on precision and clarity of line and form. In stark contrast, this series places a spotlight on imperfection. Constructed of terracotta as opposed to porcelain (terracotta arguably a low-brow clay body by comparison), each piece is press-molded into a degrading mold to reflect both the hand of the maker and the process of making. Imperfections, parting lines of the mold, and cracks from the drying and firing process are freely presented to the viewer across the surface of each piece demonstrating the ephemerality of the mold captured in the permanence of ceramic. No two in this series are identical.

Chris Mayse received his B.A. in Studio Art from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island 2008. After graduating he pursued work in the action figure industry both designing and sculpting figures for Mattel and Hasbro from various toy lines including DC Universe and Star Wars. In 2011 he returned to school attending the MFA program at Cranbrook Academy of Art until 2013. Mayse has shown in New York City and Northern New Jersey, and his work is part of private collections throughout the Unites States and Europe.
