Andy Kem

Design

Furniture

(2012)

Maple, paracord.  Andy Kem designed the Parabolic Stool to adapt traditional, planar chair caning techniques, with modern materials into modern shapes. The object is proven out in CAD, then templates were CNC cut from the digital model. Pieces are then shaped from solid American hardwoods, assembled with floating tenons, and finished with a clear varnish. The last step is weaving or “caning” the seating surface, which is something that the designer learned from his grandfather’s woodworking and craft-making when he was young.
